  1. SISC 2007 aims to provide students with the opportunity to be innovative, creative and to develop in them a global mindset in the pursuit of knowledge.  The biennial event allows students to showcase and pit their skills in a rigorous competition in the application of knowledge in the sciences.  Students will have the opportunities to interact in social and cultural activities
  2. SISC 2007 also aims to build the capacities of our educators in science education through the teachers’ and principals’ programmes. It provides opportunities for science educators to engage in professional discourse and establish and develop ties with counterparts from other schools from around the world.
  3. The working language of the event is English.
  4. The event will be held from 20 to 26 May 07 in Singapore.  It is open to all students 16 – 18 years old in 2007.

Students’ Programme

  1. Each school could nominate up to 3 teams for SISC 2007, with a maximum of 3 students per team.
  2. SISC 2007 comprises 2 components: Research Project and Science Challenge.

    Research Project

Each team should enter at least one project for SISC 2007.  The project could be done by only one student member of the team, or by more members in the team.  In the event that there is more than 1 project per team, the best scoring project will be counted towards the overall challenge.

The research project will contribute 30% to the Overall Score for SISC 2007.

    Science Challenge

Participants will be presented with a novel problem involving multi-disciplinary science in this component.  The theme and scenario of the novel problem will be sent to the teacher-in-charge one month before the actual Challenge via email.  The actual Challenge question will be released to participants on the second day of SISC 2007.  Time and resources (e.g. access to internet) will be set aside for participants to engage in creative problem solving.  Participants will present their solutions on the final day of competition.

The science challenge will constitute 70% of the Overall Score for SISC 2007.

  3. A detailed write-up of the competition format can be found in Annex A together with a sample problem for the Science Challenge in Annex B.

Science Educators’ Programme

  1. SISC 2007 aims to build the capacities of educators in science education through the teachers’ and principals’ programmes.  Accompanying teachers and principals could participate in seminars and workshops specially organised for the teaching and learning of science.
  2. Each participating school can also nominate one principal and one teacher to accompany the students throughout their stay in Singapore.
  3. To make the seminars more meaningful, educators are invited to share their experiences at the seminars on topics along any of the following themes:
    • Pedagogies in Science Education
    • Interactive Digital Media in Science Education
    • Assessment in Science Education
    • Practical work in Science Education
    • Values in Science Education

Fees and Expenses

  1. The costs for accommodation, meals, local transportation and hospitality for the students and the accompanying teacher and principal will be borne by Singapore as the host.  However, the cost of travel to and from Singapore will need to be borne by the participating school.
