At National Junior College, we do more than just developing
the academic capabilities of our students. Through our Community
Involvement Programme, we cultivate the hearts and minds of both
staff and students. We believe in the philosophy that active participation
in community service activities would develop a sense of social
responsibility, compassion and empathy. Our College actively promotes
community service so that our students will become responsible
future leaders who serve not only with passion but also with sensitivity.
In terms of developing a deeper sense of contribution to the community,
some of the projects involved a Service Learning component which
requires greater reflection and involvement on the part of the
student.
All our students are encouraged to seek out and take ownership
of meaningful and enriching community service projects throughout
their stay with the college and beyond. Besides students’
self-initiated projects, some of the regular projects and activities
that form part of our Community Involvement Programme include:

Our College College has a sustained commitment to Kudafari, Maldives. Annually, in collaboration
with PAYM, Ministry of Atolls Administration and United Nations Development Programme, around
thirty-five of our students will spend ten days in the Maldives contributing to the local community. Through interaction and cultural exchanges
with the locals, our students get to gain a deeper understanding
of the social and economic environment beyond Singapore. Activities
carried out include construction / renovation of buildings, teaching
at a local school and a healthy football competition with the local
children at the end of the day.

| Since 1998, a special date is set aside in the College calendar
for a College-wide Community Service Day, where charitable organisations
are invited to our College for a day of fun and performances. Both
our staff and students get to look after the young or elderly, joining
them in karaoke, games or simple story-telling sessions. |
| |
| Besides our College’s own Community Involvement Projects,
we also support participation in projects initiated by our partners.
For example, the PAACT initiated International Service Learning
Project to Myanmar and Youth Expedition Projects to remote areas
in Sarawak, Thailand and Cambodia. |
| |
| Interact Club is the student organisation that helps to look after
and coordinate many of the College’s community service projects.
Club members proactively seek out new projects and garner support
from the student body to support them. |
