About Us
2007
The Leadership Symposium was first started in 2001 and was designed in hopes of opening the minds of leaders in the college. Started by the president of the Sapphire Scholars Programme, hand-in-hand with the 39th student council president, the first ever Leadership Symposium aimed at exposing leaders of the college to successful ex-NJCians working in the public sector. Participants were given the opportunity to meet and dialogue with some of the most important people in the government in order to gain a better understanding of how policies are formulated in Singapore. Perhaps the most remembered part of the first symposium is the closing dialogue with Mr. Lim Swee Say (Minister, Prime Minister’s Office). A funny and amiable man, his dialogue was engaging and interesting and it gave us all a chance to really understand what the role of the Government is in shaping our lives through various policies. Other memorable activities include the Learning Journeys to different MNCs where participants got to see first-hand the workings of different government organisations, as well as the Moot Parliament, where for the first time, NJCians were given the opportunity to enact a parliament sitting and pass a law, just like the actual thing. What made it even more exciting was the fact that it was done in Parliament House itself, complete with appropriate costumes!
2008
After a successful first Leadership Symposium in 2007, a second symposium was carried out in 2008. This time, however, the theme was centred on Business and Entrepreneurship in the Private Sector. Participants were given the chance to meet entrepreneurs both young and old to learn the different skills and qualities of a true businessman. There was also inspiring lecture by members of the organisation Home, which emphasised the need for companies to care for its people and not just aim to maximise profit all the time. The highlight of the entire symposium can be said to be the business case study competition held during the symposium. The intense competition forced students to work with one another to solve a crisis, much like in a real world situation where problems come as quickly as they need to be solved and members are forced to work together. Although different from 2007, the fundamental aims of the symposium were essentially the same; to understand the makings of real-world leaders, and to draw inspiration from them so that leaders of the college will strive to be leaders once they leave the school.
